Devin Wilde an artist and ceramicist
Devin Wilde, artist and ceramicist, creates forms that evolve with a geometric language of both form and function

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, artist and ceramicist Devin Wilde was originally trained in architecture at Stanford University before returning to his lifelong passion of sculpture.
Devin spent several years at artist residencies in ceramics and wood at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Penland School of Craft, and others before returning home to NYC to launch his ceramics practice.

In 2023, Devin founded his eponymous design studio. Referencing his backround in architecture, Devin draws inspiration from an electric array of styles; namely Art Deco, Classicism and its myriads of revival periods, and Post Modernism. As he explains, “I explore forms that simultaneously convey both ancient and distinctly modern sensibilities. The relationship between shape and shadow is key to my work. The geometric languages I develop are a careful marriage of form and function; they give structure to the forms, yes, but are primarily mechanisms for creating drama with light.”

The plinths, pedestals, and socles that once served the world’s greatest temples – showcasing fine sculptures, fire bowls, and glyptic designs – are precursors to ceramicist Devin Wilde’s first collection of ceramic furniture entitled Series No. II. On the heels of his successful inaugural launch, the maker has scaled his practice up and has shifted focus from tabletop vessels to the venerable bases that support them. His pious approach treats these furnishings as elements integral to daily rituals in dialogue with the objects they often display.

2024 was a big year for New York ceramic artist Devin Wilde. His debut collection of vessels, inspired by the brownstone row houses that characterised his Brooklyn upbringing, caught the attention of collectors and enthusiasts. But for Wilde, those vessels were just the beginning, a way to refine his aesthetic sense and establish his voice in a crowded field.

This year, Wilde has scaled up, both literally and creatively. His body of work has grown to include small tables and furniture pieces, each one a testament to his appreciation for the challenge of creating larger forms.

Wilde’s style is an eclectic fusion of classical architecture, Art Deco and postmodern references, with their geometric shapes and column motifs. His glazes, inspired by oxidized metal and weathered stone, lend a sense of something unearthed, like an ancient artefact that was pulled from an Italian lake.
