The winners showcase ceramics as a versatile and essential resource in modern architecture and interior design.

The 24th ASCER Tile of Spain Awards

As part of the Time of Spain initiative, which brings together nearly 70 companies from the Spanish ceramic sector, the awards ceremony for the 24th Tile of Spain Awards for Architecture, Interior Design, and Master’s Thesis has taken place.

Organised and promoted by ASCER, the awards were announced past November and officially presented today in Oropesa (Castellón). The jury included renowned professionals: Julio Touza, president and architect at Touza Arquitectos; architect Martín Lejagarra; interior designer Carmen Baselga; Antonio Jesús Luna from ROOM Diseño; and Susana Babiloni from the Castellón Territorial Association of Architects (known in Spanish as CTAC).

Sponsored by the Port Authority of Valencia and supported by the Regional Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs of the Generalitat Valenciana, the Tile of Spain Awards recognise outstanding architectural works, interior design projects, and master’s theses that showcase ceramic floor and wall tiles manufactured by ASCER member companies. With a well-established track record, the awards are widely recognised within the architecture and interior design community.

For the first time ever, this latest edition introduces subcategories in Architecture (A-a, A-b) and Interior Design (I-a, I-b), each awarding a first prize of €8,000, while the Master’s Thesis category for architecture students offers a prize of €3,000. Additionally, awards are granted to a national and an international media outlet in their recognition of their contribution to the dissemination and promotion of Spanish ceramics.

This year’s edition of the Awards highlights the versatility of ceramics in contemporary architecture and interior design, featuring projects ranging from modular housing and heritage restoration to creative interior design across various spaces.

Results of the 24th Tile of Spain Awards

Architecture category:

 Architecture Award – Subcategory Aa

The Casa Marratxí project by Casas inHAUS has been honoured for its seamless integration of ceramic tiles into an industrialised constructive system. The uniform use of the material throughout interior and exterior spaces reinforces the modular housing concept and the potential of ceramics in prefabrication processes.

Architecture Award – Subcategory Ab

The “Interventions at the Monastery of Santa María de Sijena” by Pemán y Franco Arquitectos and Sebastián Arquitectos, have been recognised for the elegance and sensitivity of a restoration that honours the historic heritage. The subtle use of ceramic floor enhances the existing architecture without overshadowing it.

Interior Design category:

Interior Design Award – Subcategory Ia

The Brickell Penthouse Miami by François Guglielmina (TOGU Miami Design) has been acknowledged for its neo-pop, urban-inspired interior design concept, where natural light is integrated as a design element. Large-format ceramic surfaces add dynamism and brightness, making it the centre piece of the design.

Interior Design Award – Subcategory Ib

 Il Mio Design’s Boc Beach project has been awarded for its creative approach and the prominent role of colour and ceramic textures in the design. The wide range of ceramic formats enhances the space’s identity and enables a smooth transition between indoors and outdoors.

Master’s Thesis category

Master’s Thesis Award:

The Master’s Thesis Award has been granted to “Manos Cerámicas” by Manuel Alexander Fustamante Mori from CEU San Pablo University in Madrid, for its comprehensive homage to ceramics. The project stands out for its respect for traditional architecture and for using the ceramic process as a driving force in an intervention that revitalises the heritage of the village Los Loros, in La Gomera.

Honourable mentions:

The jury awarded two honourable mentions in Architecture, three in Interior Design, and one the in Master’s Thesis category:

Architecture: “PabellónFerrobús” by EOVASTUDIO and “El camino de la Almazara” by CARPE STUDIO and Miguel Hernández Alonso (Piano Piano Studio).

Interior Design: “Hotel Kimpton Los Monteros” by El Equipo Creativo, “Lapis Domus” by RUIZVELAZQUEZ STUDIO and “Hipotels Don Juan” by Il Mio Design.

 Master’s Thesis: “Garoé” by Marta Morato Costa from Madrid School of Architecture (known in Spanish as ETSAM).

Media Outlet category:

This year, the international media award was granted to “Tile & Stone Journal” by ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, while the national media award went to the magazine “Arquitectura y Diseño”.
