International Sea Fishing Base, embracing the rugged coastline and maritime heritage of Shengshan Island by Benedetta Tagliabue, EMBT Architects
EMBT Architects is an internationally renowned architecture studio founded in 1994 by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, and today continues its work under Benedetta Tagliabue’s direction. With offices in Barcelona and Shanghai, its poetic, context-sensitive architecture brings together tradition and innovation, transforming each site through careful observation of its history, culture and landscape.
Awarded first prize in the 2023 Landmark Building International Invitational Competition, the project for the International Sea Fishing Base embraces the rugged coastline and maritime heritage of Shengshan Island. Known for its rich aquatic resources, the island is transforming into an international tourism and marine sports destination. The project includes three interventions: the Angler’s Block, the Fishing Culture Exhibition Hall and the Reef Restaurant.
The Angler’s Block is located between the rock and the coast. Its modular system adapts to the site’s diverse spaces and heights, while its façade, inspired by fishing nets, is designed with colourful metal strips.The Fishing Culture Exhibition Hall appears as an object found in the sea, covered by the ocean’s patina. Built with concrete, glass, bamboo and shining aluminium panels, it interacts with daylight and changing weather conditions.
Inspired by fish bones, the Reef Restaurant is placed among the rocks like a land-art project, offering panoramic views and the experience of enjoying fresh seafood inside a fish. Together, thethreeinterventionscreate a dialoguebetweenarchitecture, landscape and ShengshanIsland’senduring maritime culture.
